Science-Traits and Heredity

While reading about traits and heredity on http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/, I was shocked at some of the very interesting things I learned. For example, I learned that all humans share 99.9 percent of identical DNA. I was very surprised because humans look very different from eachother, but are incredibly alike. While learning about heredity, I found that the mother and father of a baby each have 23 chromosomes to form a cell called a zygote. The zygote is made of 46 chromosomes and when it divides, it forms a baby. This division is why children sometimes are more like one parent or sometimes are like both. These are two of many interesting things I learned about genetics.

Science Class Reflection

Sofar this year, the thing that I had the most fun learning about in class was the biomes. There were so many things that I was clueless about. For example, I would think that the tundra would be a very wet place. However, I learned that it is actually like a cold desert. I also enjoyed watching the video about all of the biomes. I was amazed at how long a hunt can actually go on and how randomly a great white shark can burst out of the water to fetch the seal! Another thing that interested me was the wet season and dry season in the desert. It can be dry for days and days, even months, and start to pour out of nowhere. Although it was very interesting, I don't think I would want to go to a desert.

Deciduous forests have seemed to interest me more than coniferous. In deciduous forests, most animals camouflage themselves to look like the ground. I was surprised after reading this because I remember walking through a deciduous forest last year at Camp Bernie, and remember thinking to myself that there weren't any animals. Now I know that there were probably some on the ground that I didn't see. Plants adapt to the deciduous forest by leaning towards the sun. Another way of adaptation is soaking up the nutrients in the ground. The whole world is made up of different biomes, and I hope to soon learn more about them.
